Augustus J.H. Courbarron

Here in a seven part series is the story of the life of my Great-Great Grandfather Augustus James Hamilton Courbarron. It originally began as an essay and was deteriorating on several sheets of paper having been written about twenty years ago – I decided it was time to publish his story and now it is online it is preserved forever for his descendants to enjoy and be proud of.

Always known as ‘James’, his life makes for fascinating reading at a time when the British Empire was at its peak and life at sea for those who transported supplies by ship around the world was perilous and arduous. It also gives a very interesting view of Sydney at the turn of the century – at a time when Australia was newly federated and a strong nation in the making. Best of all it is the story of my family and how a branch of it came from the green hills and turbulent times of Ireland to the new young land ‘down under’.
