Mary Hamilton is my 3rd Great Grandmother - her husband Frederick Courbarron was born on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, not the 'Isle of Normandy' as there is no such place, however his parents were both born in and emigrated from Normandy where the surname is found. Both are buried in Landulph cemetery in the south of England. Frederick Courbarron's parents were farmers who emigrated from France to Jersey in the early 1800's and their graves are still there today, my cousin has visited them though they have been neglected.
I descend from Stanhopes brother Augustus James. I have been aware of family in the States for years now and Raymond's Mum visited here (Ireland) back in 2003 but unfortunately I was ill at the time of her visit and was unable to catch up with her. Nice to hear from you cousin!

Raymond Lugo is too modest -- he is part of the Coeur-Barron clan here in California! Mary Hamilton married Frederick Augustus Courbarron (Isle of Normandy). One of their sons, Stanhope Frederick Hamilton Courbarron attended Ontario Agricultural College, then settled in Saskatchewan and married Agnes Whitlock. They had 4 children, including my grandfather, Frederick Herbert Hamilton Coeur-Barron (he changed the name) and Kathleen Barrett, Raymond's great-grandmother.

My partner is descended from the Hamiltons of Fintra(ugh)House in Donegal. I wonder if you know the connection between your branch and the Fintra branch. The Fintra Hamilton brothers, James and William, arrived early 1600.

Hi. In 2003, my mom and I got to travel to Brownhall and visit with the relatives there several years ago. It was so nice to meet them. I was reading John Hamilton of Donegal 1800-1884: This Recklessly Generous Landlord during our trip around the island. It was an interesting way to learn about that part of the family and Ireland. We even stayed at St. Ernans. We live in California and still stay in touch with the Couer-Barron branch here in California.

Hi Colin - sorry for taking so long in replying to this but we have recently relocated back to Belfast and we have been doing all the settling-in stuff and it has been madness around here!

Glad you liked the pics and so glad they were such a nice find for you. It is always fun to find something new eh...?
Feel free, if you haven't already, to copy and paste them from this site and use them yourself. These things are for sharing!

I would be eager to know of anything else interesting you might have about the Willis family.

Hi to you both Gary and Paul - firstly I must apologise for taking so long in replying to these queries; we have recently moved back here to Belfast and it has taken some time getting internet re-installed and a host of other stuff - madness!

Having researched the Brownhall Hamilton's for nigh on twenty years I can safely say there is no link between those of Donegal and Ballarat, Victoria. There were several saints in Ireland named St Ernan and it was common for the Irish, expats included, to name their homes after a saint. This is what John Hamilton of Brownhall did with his house St Ernan's and no doubt your ancestor did the same thing.

John Hamilton's grandson - my GG Grandfather Augustus Courbarron - named his own house in Sydney 'St Ernans' ( a family thing )even though it did not resemble the original in Ireland.

I can make a few more enquiries however just in case there is something I have not covered - will post it here.

My grandfather's name was Fenwick Loftus Hamilton and he was born in Ballarat Victoria to Fenwick b. 1838, Co Donegal d. 1896 in Ballarat and Sarah Eliza Cherry Hamilton (nee Lynn) b. 1850 and d. 1933 (she was born at sea). They lived at St Ernan's in Ballarat. On our recent trip to Ireland we could not find a link between Fenwick of St Ernan's Ballarat, and the Hamilton's of St Ernan's Donegal. Very odd that Fenwick should call his Australian home by the same name if there is no link. Is this of any help?

I have just stumbled across this site looking for information on Joseph Wells Willis and Mary Ann Davidson who were my great great great grandparents through their son William Joseph Wells Willis (my gg grandfather) who married Laura Wegener Reynolds -their daughter Violet Maude (known as Jess and who is in the photo at the Wrightville shop) was my great grandmother who I was lucky enough to meet when I was young. Violet married Henry John Ellis (Cobar 1902) and their daugher Lorna Sarah married my grandfather Russell James Oxford. Thank you for the fantastic site and photos. I have been researching for over 20 years so was thrilled to see the photos. I'll gladly pass on any information I come across, although you are well ahead of me. I'd be happy to correspond with anyone else who may also be following the Ellis / Willis lines around Forbes, Broken Hill, Tambaroora, Hill End
